Elm Tree Propagated from Historic John Quincy Adams Tree
The elm tree dominating this photograph was planted by First Lady Barbara Bush in 1991 using a sapling propagated from an elm tree planted by President John Quincy Adams in 1826. President Adams' elm tree died in 1991. Mrs. Bush's elm tree no longer survives, but had been located on the South Lawn of the White House Grounds. The two Japanese maples, the small, chocolate colored bushes in the lower left of the photograph, were planted by First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland in 1893 and First Lady Rosalynn Carter in 1978. This photograph was taken by Bruce White for the White House Historical Association.
